What To Do Right Now

Common emergencies, first steps

Whatever has happened, don’t wait it out. The earlier we see a dental problem, the simpler the treatment usually is. Here’s what to do before you get to us.

Trauma

A knock to the mouth

Check your teeth after any knock to the face. If an adult tooth has been knocked out, don’t scrub it. Holding it by the crown, try to sit it gently back in the socket and keep it there. If you can’t, put it in a small container of milk and come straight in — minutes matter.

Damage

Chipped or broken tooth

Find the fragment if you can and keep it damp — it can sometimes be bonded back on. Rinse your mouth with warm water and call us. Even a small chip is worth checking, because a weakened tooth can crack further.

Damage

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown and bring it with you. The exposed tooth will often feel sensitive to hot, cold and air, and it is weaker than it feels — chew on the other side until we’ve seen it.

Pain

Severe or unexplained pain

Ongoing, intense tooth or jaw pain is an emergency, not something to push through. It can signal an infection that will spread if left. Call us the same day — we keep time for emergencies.

Bleeding

Bleeding gums

Gums that bleed when you brush usually point to gum disease — book a visit, but it isn’t urgent. Bleeding that won’t stop after an extraction is different: bite firmly on clean gauze or a clean cloth and call us straight away.

Dentures

Broken denture

Don’t try to glue a denture back together — household adhesives damage the material and can make a proper repair impossible. Collect the pieces and bring them in.

Braces

Broken brace wire

Never cut a broken wire. If it’s poking, try to reposition it gently with the eraser end of a pencil, or cover the end with orthodontic wax, and call us for an appointment.

Talk to us

Not sure how urgent it is?

Call us and describe what’s happening. We’ll tell you honestly whether it needs to be seen today, tomorrow or at your next check-up — and what to do in the meantime.

When to call 000 instead

Some situations need a hospital, not a dentist. Call 000 or go to the nearest emergency department if you have:

  • facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing
  • bleeding that can’t be controlled
  • a suspected broken jaw
  • swelling spreading towards the eye or down the neck
Putting It Right

Treatments that fix it

Once you’re out of pain, we’ll talk you through what happens next — calmly, with prices before anything starts. These are the treatments an emergency visit most often leads to.

When we’re here

Monday to Friday 9:00am–6:00pm and Saturday 9:00am–4:00pm. We keep appointments free for emergencies and welcome walk-ins — calling ahead on 02 4933 4667 helps us have a chair ready for you.

After hours
